Here's another round-up of websites that use patterns in their designs and use them well.

Here’s another round-up of websites that use patterns in their designs and use them well. Bold or subtle, these are some samples of great design work that integrate patterns.

Studio Sweet Studio
I really like the illustrated style and colo palette chosen for the background of this site. Very playful and eye-catching.

Preloaded
Preloaded also uses a nice, darker illustrated pattern.

Another Face in the Crowd
A very cool, more realistic pattern used here. Even though it’s a bit busy, it works against the minimal style on the content. Very nice.

Ad Packs
Ad Packs uses a great subtle, plaid pattern. The color and style work very well with the overall look and feel – much like Americana or a 50′s style picnic.

Shaun Inman
Shaun uses a simple grid background, but it works well with the scale along with the 8-bit style of imagery.

Just wanted to do a quick round-up of websites that use patterns in their designs and use them well. From bold to subtle, these are some samples of great design work that integrate patterns.

tamcai.com
tamcai.com uses a great little pinstripe design to help pop the design and the elements in the foreground. The stripes aren’t super tight and have been given plenty of breathing room, but also give the site a much more high-end feeling.

Redefine
The Sydney-based agency Redefine uses a very bold geometric pattern. It’s usually pretty risky to go so loud and busy on a background pattern, but in this case the pattern works very well. The color palette chosen is also very nice.

Campluxe
Campluxe uses an extremely subtle pattern, but it really helps strengthen the branding and the look and feel of the site. The pattern is a geo/iconic repeat that reuses the icons in the navigation.

Clearspan Media
I love Argyle. The Clearspan Media site uses a big, gunmetal blue style argyle background up top to give the page a visual foundation and help put more focus on the headline and portfolio samples. Also a nice touch is the much more subtle patterned and textured backgrounds used to separate different content sections on the page.

Pukkelpop 2011
It’s bright, loud and awesome. The blue dotted background up top and the big, bold green geo pattern below do a great job at illustrating the purpose and content of the site. Another hard pattern design to pull off in a design, but they do it well.

Ruhland & Ruhland
Another great example of a background pattern used to strengthen the brand. The pattern shape and coloring really make the brand pop more and put more focus on the content. The elements in the pattern look very much like the starbursts in the logo – and then again used in the navigation.

Sketchnotes
A great example of turning the content into a background pattern. It’s a tad busy, but very fun and helps strengthen the product in this case.

Electrip Pulp
Electric Pulp uses a nice, subtle dotted pattern that borders along the lines of texture. A nice, minimal way to give a little extra depth to an overall design.

Shane Guymon
Shane’s site has a nice example of an icon/illustrated background. Loving the sneakers and cassette tapes.

I received an email this morning with a link to the artwork of Eugene Andolsek and was instantly blown away. Eugene was born in 1921, and in the evenings after returning from work, he’d spend hours at his kitchen table drawing these marvelous pieces by hand and then filing them away in a trunk or closet. They were never shown or exhibited until much later in his life when a caregiver came across his work and talent.

Eugene would use pen and ink, a straight and compass, and the colored inks were mixed in eyedroppers to achieve the ultra vibrant effect. Most pieces are around 16″x20″ and I have no idea how long each piece took to create on average. For a more complete biography, please read at the American Primitive Gallery. Find even more (and larger views) or Eugene’s art here.

Here’s just a sampling of Eugene’s art. All images are copyright Eugene Andolsek and American Primitive Art & Bases, Inc.

I would love one day to see these in person. I can only imagine what the texture and line art would look like.

In this month's issue of Juxtapoz, I came across artist Kehinde Wiley and was instantly blown away by his paintings. Wiley is a Yale-grad, Harlem based portraitist that works some downright awesome patterns into his pieces. I still can't believe this guy can paint these intricate patterns without losing focus of the individual(s) in the artwork.
